“I file myself” or “Accountant files”: which tax-refund package to choose

Dopomoga offers two ways to reclaim overpaid income tax (inkomstenbelasting) in the Netherlands. Both start with a check of whether you have grounds for a refund. The difference is who files the return, which data that requires and how much of your own time it takes.

What each package means

SELF

I file myself

€39per tax year, one-off payment

You send your jaaropgaaf (the annual income statement from your employer) and briefly describe your situation. We check whether there are grounds for a refund and prepare a step-by-step guide in your language. You then log in to Mijn Belastingdienst with your own DigiD and file the return following that guide. We do not ask for your BSN or IBAN in this package — note that the jaaropgaaf you upload contains your BSN.

FULL

Accountant files

€89per tax year, one-off payment

You fill in the form, answer 5 short questions about your situation and pick a call slot. On the call an accountant of the partner firm goes through your case with you, and together you set up the authorisation via DigiD Machtigen. After that the registered accountant prepares and files the return while you follow the status on your request page.

In both packages the refund amount is decided and paid by the Belastingdienst. We do not promise a specific amount: the outcome depends on your income, the tax withheld, the months you worked and the deductions you are entitled to.

Point-by-point comparison

The prices in this table are read from the same code the checkout uses, so they always match the amount Stripe Checkout will show.

Which package to choose

Choose “I file myself” when:

  • You are an employee and have a jaaropgaaf for every year you want to file.
  • You have a DigiD and are ready to log in to Mijn Belastingdienst yourself — the guide walks you through every step.
  • Your situation is simple: one or several employers, no business of your own and no income from abroad.
  • You do not want to type your BSN and IBAN into any form — this package does not ask for them (your BSN appears only on your jaaropgaaf).
  • The lowest price matters to you and 15 minutes of filing is not a problem.

Choose “Accountant files” when:

  • You want a registered accountant to prepare and file the return while you only follow the status.
  • It is your first year in the Netherlands, you have the 30% ruling or you are not sure whether it applies to you.
  • There are things to check: commuting costs, medical or education expenses, rent, children.
  • You file together with a fiscal partner or for several years at once and want a professional to work it out.
  • You want a conversation in your language before filing, not only a written guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which package fits the year I moved to the Netherlands (M-aangifte)?

For the year in which you moved to or from the Netherlands the Belastingdienst expects an M-aangifte — the return for people who lived abroad for part of the year. It can be filed online in Mijn Belastingdienst with DigiD (the option for taxpayers who lived outside the country for part of the year) or on paper with form M. In “I file myself” you walk that path yourself with our guide; in “Accountant files” the accountant does it under the authorisation. The first year often gives grounds for a refund because wage tax was withheld as if you had worked the full year.

I did not work the whole year. Do I need a separate package?

No, there is no separate package — this is one of the most common situations for both. Your employer withholds tax from every salary as if you work all 12 months; if you started or left mid-year, the annual total often comes out lower than what was withheld. The return recalculates the tax on your actual income. If you only have a jaaropgaaf and nothing unusual, “I file myself” is usually enough.

What happens if no refund is due to me?

Both packages start with a check of your grounds for a refund — that check and the preparation (of the guide or of the filing) is what you pay for, not the refund itself. A return can also come out at zero: the Belastingdienst decides, and we do not promise an amount. The service starts right after payment; if we cannot deliver the paid package, the fee is refunded — the procedure is described in the Terms of Use.

How long does the Belastingdienst take to process a return?

If you file before 1 April, the Belastingdienst sends its decision before 1 July. For returns filed later and for earlier years it publishes indicative timelines on its own page “Wanneer hoor ik iets?” — linked below. Payment after the decision is described on “Wanneer krijg ik mijn geld?”. These timelines do not depend on the package you choose: after filing, in both SELF and FULL, the tax office does the rest.

Can I start with “I file myself” and switch to “Accountant files” later?

Yes, as long as the work on your request is not completed. Your status page has an upgrade button: you pay only the difference between the price of the chosen “Accountant files” configuration and what you already paid; everything paid counts in full. A fiscal partner can be added during the upgrade. The upgrade is a separate purchase with the same consent to the immediate start of the service.

Which data does each package need and what happens to it?

In “I file myself” — a jaaropgaaf for each year and a short description of your situation; we do not ask for your BSN or IBAN (your BSN appears only on the jaaropgaaf itself), and your documents are seen only by the Dopomoga operator who prepares your guide. In “Accountant files” the accountant needs your BSN, the IBAN for the payout, the jaaropgaaf and, for a joint return, your partner’s BSN. These fields are stored encrypted; only the accountant handling your request and the Dopomoga administrator can access them — in the system they are hidden by default and every view is logged. The documents and sensitive fields are deleted automatically within a few months after the request is completed or cancelled — the retention periods are set out in the Privacy Policy.

What is a fiscal partner and when do I need the add-on?

A fiscal partner is your spouse, registered partner or a person you live with under the Belastingdienst conditions — a shared address plus one of the criteria: a child together, a jointly owned home (eigen woning), a notarial cohabitation contract (samenlevingscontract) and so on. Partners file their returns in a coordinated way and may split certain deductions between them. The add-on is needed when the return has to be prepared with your partner taken into account: in SELF the guide covers both of you, in FULL the accountant includes your partner in the preparation and filing. Whether you are fiscal partners — check on the Belastingdienst website.

Can I file for several years at once?

Yes. The Belastingdienst accepts a return for each of the 5 preceding tax years, so one request can cover several years. Each year is a separate return; the price is per year at the chosen package’s rate, and all selected years are paid in one checkout. Each year needs its own jaaropgaaf. The current year can only be filed after it has ended. If you are not sure which years are worth filing, start with the check on the service page.

Are these packages suitable for ZZP?

No. Both packages are designed for employees with a jaaropgaaf. If you are a ZZP or have income from your own business, the annual return with the business part is prepared by an accountant as a separate service — see the “Online accountant” page.

On the service page you pick the package, the number of years and the fiscal-partner add-on — the total is shown before you pay.

The refund amount is decided and paid by the Belastingdienst. In “I file myself” you file the return; in “Accountant files” it is filed by a registered accountant of the partner firm under a DigiD Machtigen authorisation.
